Black Country training provider has been chosen to help deliver a major skills boost for the UK aerospace sector.
In-Comm Training, which operates two academies in Aldridge and Shrewsbury, is part of the £320,000 EU-funded Erasmus+ AEERO (Aerospace Engineering ECVET Resources Online) project that will create a suite of interactive online training resources.
Gareth Jones, Managing Director at In-Comm Training, said: “There has been a 30% productivity growth in the aerospace sector in the last five years, but there is still a lack of vocational training on offer to ensure that skills are relevant and up to date.
“The creation of a suite of online training resources, which will feature input from industry leaders, will support the vocational skills required by engineers across the EU aerospace industry, from supply chain development through to preventative and breakdown maintenance.”
He continued: “With a £31bn turnover, the UK has the largest aerospace sector in Europe and second only to the US in the world. It’s our job to make sure we listen to firms from this industry and develop innovative new learning methods that give them the skills they need now and in the future. AEERO has an important role to play in this.”
Midlands plastics manufacturer Aquapak Polymers has won a prestigious cleantech award for its recyclable and biodegradable plastic at the Rushlight Awards.
Aquapak won the award for most ‘Responsible Product’ for its range of flexible plastic packaging films that are twice as strong as comparable films, and are fully recyclable and biodegradable.
Mike Everard, Managing Director of Aquapak said: “Last year only 14% of plastic packaging was recycled in the UK. Given that plastic production is set to rise as is flexible packaging, it is essential we find sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, that possess both the functional strength and barriers to extend shelf life, but also offer a range of reprocessing or recovery options once they’ve been used.
“Instead of formulating a completely new material we focussed on improving the functionality and performance of a polymer called Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH), most commonly used for detergent pouches and as a lubricant in eye-drops. Through a patented process we significantly increased the strength of PVOH, as well as making it tear and puncture resistant.
